The Perfect Canvas

Have you ever been asked what your “skin type” is?

If so, do you know what it means?

Your skin type is what the natural texture of your skin is, and is determined by how much oil, or sebum, your skin produces, as well as genetics/hormones and environmental factors such as the climate you live in and how well you take care of your skin. It can play a huge role in determining your skincare and makeup routine.

Skin Types

There are five main skin types and each comes with different benefits and challenges:

  1. Oily - more sebum than normal; can appear shiny or greasy; often have blackheads and enlarged pores; prone to breakouts

  2. Normal - balanced skin without excess oil or dryness

  3. Combination - skin that has two or more other skin types in different areas; most common is oily t-zone with dry cheeks

  4. Dry - skin that doesn’t produce enough oil causing it to crack, flake or peel; skin may feel tight

  5. Sensitive - skin that is easily irritated by things like stress, skincare, makeup, even things like laundry detergent and perfume

So what does that have to do with wedding makeup or makeup in general?

When choosing makeup to use, considering your skin type can make all the difference. Nearly every makeup product is available in different forms that will best compliment your skin - liquid, cream, powder, cream-to-powder, hydrating, full-coverage - these are just a few terms used.

Choosing Foundation

Here are our three tips when choosing foundation based on your skin type:

  1. For oily or combination skin types, it’s important to stick with an oil-free foundation that will last throughout the day like medium to full coverage and has mattifying properties in it. Layering a powder foundation on top will help keep the shine at bay.

  2. As a dry skin type, you need all the moisture you can get, so go with something that packs a punch with extra moisturization or hyaluronic acid in it. You can also consider using a serum like Sonia Roselli’s Water Elixir and mixing it with your foundation to add that glow-from-within-look.

  3. If you have sensitive skin, you must pay attention to the ingredient list. A general rule of thumb is that the fewer ingredients listed, the better.

By using the correct types of foundation on your skin, you can achieve that perfect, effortless look while at the same time working with your skin instead of against it.
